When I was a little girl, I spent a lot of time at my grandma’s house. My parents divorced when I was three and my dad lived with my grandma for many years. When I visited him two days a week and almost every weekend, I was visiting my grandma, too. She was an amazing woman: kind, tolerant, funny and strong. She spent much of her time cooking delicious meals for our large, extended family, who always seemed to congregate at her house. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she was caring for my cousin who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy.
She was, and still is, the first person who comes to my mind when I think of generosity. Unless you were trying to eat her HoHos®. In her breadbox, my grandma kept a small stash of cookies, Twinkies®, HoHos®, and King Don’s® (that’s what Ding Dongs® were called in my part of the country…many, many years ago) (yes, I’m old). My cousins and I had to be really good if we wanted to get something out of the breadbox. Either that, or really sneaky.
Fast forward 30 years (see that? I really am old), and now I’m the one buying Hostess® products. The latest favorite, in our house, are the New Frosted Devil’s Food Donettes®. When we need a quick and easy breakfast, the moist, devil’s food cake and chocolaty coating go perfectly with some fresh fruit and yogurt, and we always take Donettes® with us when our family goes camping. The last thing I want to do after crawling out of a tent is to make breakfast on a campstove. Have you ever tried to wash cooked-on eggs out of a pan at a campsite? Yeah.
Hostess® has been around since 1930, since before my parents were born. They grew up with Hostess® products; I grew up with them, and now my kids are enjoying them, too. I think my grandma, in particular, would have loved the New Chocolate Crème Twinkies®! Though I have no doubt my 10 year old self would have tried extra-hard to sneak one. I know this because my daughter loves them. She takes after her mother like that.
Now BlogHer wants to know your favorite Hostess® memory and by sharing you can be entered to win a $100 Visa gift card!

I used to love eating a hostess cupcake when I got home from school. We were only allowed 3 a week though :).

ZINGERS! My sisters and I loved Zingers and my grandma always kept them in her pantry for us. We would eat one box in one sitting (GROSS, I know).
And now I want a Zinger.
Jenny
When I was young, and in swimming lessons, my mom would always buy us something from the vending machines when we were done, because we were famished. My all time favorite treat was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Pudding Pie. Kind of like the apple or cherry or lemon ones, but it had green vanilla pudding in it. I wish they made something similar to that now. They were so good!

I…was the child of the local hippie herbalist midwife. I was not allowed to eat Hostess products. There was shame in even asking. Didn’t I know what horrible things were in that stuff? Did I want to die young of heart disease? HAVE SOME CAROB CHIPS AND BE QUIET. When I was about four, though, I went on a playdate to a friend’s house, and lunch? Consisted of THE NECTAR OF THE GODS. Spaghetti-os! Capri Sun! And for dessert, we each got one of those ubiquitous Hostess filled cupcakes, with the curlicue of white icing across the top. Oh, man. I reverently lifted a little of that icing up with my fingernail and placed it on my tongue. SUGARRRRRR!!! I remember that cupcake as one of the single most delicious things I have ever eaten, even if I haven’t had one since. Now I’m that jerkhole crunchy granola mom who doesn’t let her kids eat Hostess products, but I do bake similar versions at home with healthier ingredients, and my kids don’t seem to mind. Still, that cupcake was the BOMB.
Anita
Hostess Cupcakes were always my favorite. I loved to break them in half and eat the cream filling out of the middle and then the icing off the top. Yum!
Lisa @ Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh Boy
When I was little my mom bought me the cinnamon rolls and perfected the time required to warm one up in the microwave…without MELTING the icing. Everytime I pass the rack of them in the store I think of her. For my own kids I LOVE donettes for a tasty weekend treat. They are perfect for us on a Sunday morning (in the car on the way to church) to save time!

I’m torn between the Suzy Q’s I used to buy at the school vending machine, licking the frosting out of the middle. Or the Ho-Ho’s I would meticulously eat all the chocolate coating off of, before carefully unrolling it and licking out the frosting. Apparently, I had a thing for licking out the frosting!

I have hypoglycemia, and it was much worse when I was younger. I passed out 3 times in middle school and ended up in an ambulance directly from school to the ER two of those times. Mostly it was because I forgot to eat. As a result my Mom was desperate to get me to eat breakfast. She (and I) figured out the best solution for each morning was some fruit and several Donettes®. She was happy I ate something, I was thrilled that it was powdery, sugary goodness, and we were both pleased when I stopped requiring emergency transportation from school.
Joni
My story is similar, if not the same. Although, instead of being good and rewarded with the Hostess cake, I was the sneaky one and just grabbed the stash (I am old too, but I was stealthy in my younger days!!). Hostess has been a part of my life since I can remember, and don’t think I will ever give them up!!!

Is it wrong that my favorite Hostess memory is from when I was an adult??
When I first started teaching school way back in 1992, I was the only Kindergarten teacher in a K-12 country school. My husband taught all the high school science classes at the same school. On the way home we would stop at a little convenience store in the middle of nowhere for a snack. I always bought Chocolate Zingers or Powdered Sugar Donuts. Always. The sweet little man at the counter would ask me the same question every day. “Did you learn something today, or do you have to go back tomorrow?” Every time I eat Zingers or those yummy donuts I think about that little man and how much I’ve learned since then!

I grew up with an Adelle-Davis-health-food-loving mom (MFA Mom up there: carob brownies–yes!) and only ever saw Hostess cakes in my friends’ lunches.
Till one day at about 12 when I was at a grocery store with my Dad and right there in front of us, right below eye level on top of display, was a box of Twinkies. On sale. Mom wasn’t there. Dad winked at me and put them in the cart. I could NOT believe my eyes! I was SO excited!
I later ate quite a few of their fruit pies from the vending machines in my college dorm the days that I missed dinner in the cafeteria.

When I was a kid my mom used to buy ding-dongs from the outlet store. And she thought she was sneaky and she would “hide” the big box of ding-dongs in the freezer. But my brothers and I of course knew about the hidden treats and can I tell you how delicious a frozen ding-dong is? Ding-dong. What a great name. And what great memories! As a mom what I love about Hostess products is that the serving size is not enormous and so when my kids have a treat it isn’t some enormous, terrifyingly full of calories sort of thing.
Julie Smetzer
My first cupcake was a dream come true. Chocolate of course. First: stripped the frosting off the top, with each bite savored its generous thickness (no cheap topping from Hostess!!). Then dug out the vanilla cream filling with the tip of my tongue. Oh. Yeah. And the cake part? Left in a crumbed heap on my plate. Heck, I’d eaten all the good parts already.

When I saw this giveaway and the fact that it was Hostess, I knew I have the perfect memory. My mother had been out shopping and our favorite snacks were twinkies and zingers. Well, my brother took the package of twinkies behind my mom’s back and took them to his room. He sat in his room and ate the whole box. He was so sick that night. My parents wondered why he was so sick. The next day my mom found the empty box with wrappers in his room. Needless to say he didn’t receive any punishment for it. Guess they decided that him being sick was punishment enough. Thanks for the giveaway!

Every Easter I make “bunny racers” using twinkies for the body of a race care. I gut a little seat out of near the front and put a Peeps bunny driver in the seat with a life savor (the big ones) steering wheel. It is the Ding Dong. I had a friend in grade school that had a Ding Dong in her lunch every day. I was so envious of the wonderful little silver disk. Every once in a while she would share her delicious little chocolate cake. She would cut it into four pieces and i would savor my portion. Now that I am an adult and can choose what goes in my lunch. So whenever I am in need of just a little comfort to take me back to those simple grade school days I throw in a Ding Dong.

mmmmm I love love love their Banana Walnut Mini Muffins! When I used to work, I would have a baggy of them with a cold OJ for breakfast nearly every morning. I miss that tradition, but not the working. LOL! Thanks for the chance to win!!!

I like most Hostess snacks and I would get to choose a different one each week we’d go to the grocery store.

I remember in the summer when my dad would take us to the beach, he’d get us the little cup cakes as a treat! They were so yummy.

I remember stashing Twinkies growing up like they were gold. My clothes closet & locker were full of them. Some kids were into pogs… I was into twinkies!

My mother’s dad (my grandpa) lived with us for years. He take walks to the local mall, rest, do a little shopping buying wonderful things like HoHos and then walk home. Mom wasn’t too happy about the snacks, but we thought it was great!

We rarely had sweets at home when I was a kid, but once day in school a friend gave me half her Twinkie – wow I was in heaven!

My favorite first and continuing memory of a Hostess® snack cake is the velvety sponge cake Twinkie and biting into the cream filling. Ummm.

I remember in my childhood when my mom gave me the Twinkies® after school I was so happy and I enjoyed the super soft cake that afternoon, this is my favorite memory of a Hostess® snack cake and I give my children the same Twinkies® after school, they are so happy to have them too. It is nothing better than you see your loved ones are so happy.

My dad worked for interstate brands when I was a child, so he was a delivery man for bread and Hostess products!!!! A few days a week, he would bring home a treat for me, and he knew my favorite was Suzy Qs. Zingers were a close second 🙂 My children know the joy of Hostess, too!

A favorite memory I have was going grocery shopping with my mom as a child and we’d always buy a package of hostess treats to enjoy on the way home! Usually the Cupcakes or Hoho’s. Yummmmm. Simple but so fun! 🙂

My favorite memory is sharing Hostess cupcakes with my dad. We tried to make them last as long as possible but we didn’t have much resistance to all that yummy goodness.

It started with hostess treats in my lunchbox for school and for the rest of my life, I’ve never been able to resist those little chocolate donuts. Thanks a lot, Mom!

My fondest memory is receiving twinkles and donettes as treats when I visited my grandparents.
